Why SAP HANA Licensing Is Uniquely Expensive
SAP HANA was introduced as a proprietary in-memory database platform in 2010. By 2015, SAP had positioned HANA as the mandatory platform for its flagship ERP: S/4HANA cannot run on any other database. This architectural decision transformed HANA from an optional analytics accelerator into a required cost centre for every SAP S/4HANA customer.
The consequences are significant. For SAP ECC customers considering S/4HANA migration, HANA database licensing alone typically adds £800K–£3.5M to total migration costs. For existing SAP HANA customers on support, annual support fees represent 22% of HANA's already-elevated NLV — creating a perpetual, compounding cost burden that grows with every hardware refresh.
Third-party support for SAP HANA delivers equivalent platform coverage at 50–60% less than SAP's annual support fees — and is available for HANA versions from SPS 4 (2013) through the current SPS 07+ (2023+) releases.
SAP HANA Editions — What You're Actually Buying
HANA Enterprise Edition
£28,000–£45,000/64GB RAMFull HANA capabilities: in-memory OLTP + OLAP, multi-tenancy (MDC), streaming, spatial, graph. Required for S/4HANA production deployments.
HANA Platform Edition
£18,000–£28,000/64GB RAMCore in-memory database without full application suite capabilities. Used for BW/4HANA, custom HANA-native applications.
HANA Runtime Edition
Bundled with S/4HANA ULAvailable only when bundled with S/4HANA user licences. Most restrictive — cannot be used for non-S/4HANA workloads. Common source of audit findings.
HANA Express
Free (32GB RAM limit)Free developer/test edition. Not for production use. SAP auditors specifically target organisations using Express beyond its licensed scope.
SAP HANA RAM-Based Pricing — The Real Numbers
HANA licensing is priced per 64GB of allocated RAM, with a tiered volume structure that is rarely disclosed clearly in initial commercial discussions. The following table reflects indicative SAP list pricing for HANA Enterprise Edition on-premises, before negotiation.
| Allocated RAM | HANA EE Licence (List) | Annual Support (22%) | 5-Year TCO (Licence + Support) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 128 GB | £90,000 | £19,800/year | £189,000 |
| 512 GB | £360,000 | £79,200/year | £756,000 |
| 1 TB (1,024 GB) | £720,000 | £158,400/year | £1,512,000 |
| 2 TB | £1,440,000 | £316,800/year | £3,024,000 |
| 4 TB | £2,880,000 | £633,600/year | £6,048,000 |
List pricing is indicative. SAP discounts vary by deal size, customer history, and commercial leverage. However, even heavily discounted HANA agreements typically carry support fees in the range of 16–22% of discounted NLV.

Request HANA Cost Analysis →The S/4HANA Bundling Trap
SAP's S/4HANA user licence model bundles HANA Runtime Edition into S/4HANA user licences — but only for use running S/4HANA workloads on that specific HANA instance. This creates several traps:
Workload Creep
Organisations naturally want to leverage their HANA platform investment by running other workloads — BW, custom apps, analytics — on the same HANA instance. SAP's position is that any non-S/4HANA workload on a HANA Runtime Edition instance constitutes an unlicensed use, requiring HANA Platform or Enterprise Edition upgrade. This audit finding alone generates millions in SAP compliance settlements annually.
The HA Surcharge
HANA System Replication (HSR) — the standard high-availability mechanism — requires HANA licences on the secondary (standby) node. For a 1TB primary HANA instance, this effectively doubles the HANA licence cost to maintain standard enterprise HA posture. Few SAP proposals make this clear at point of sale.
DR Instance Licensing
Similarly, disaster recovery instances of HANA require separate licences. A typical three-tier landscape (production + QA/staging + DR) requires HANA licences for all three environments, not just production. GoVendorFree's SAP HANA TPS covers all environments under a single agreement at a fraction of SAP's per-instance pricing.
